I'm at a Quilting Expo today and need someone to tell me it's okay to wear my running shoes when I'm not running. I know they should be special and precious and only worn when I go running every other day. The problem is... they are special and precious and make my feet feel great so I want to wear them all the time!
They are the only good quality shoes I have so when I am not wearing them my feet say "Hey! Where are those fancy shoes we like soooooo much?"
When the budget gets better in a month, I'll get another pair of shoes that make my feet feel great. For now, I just need someone to say, go put on your shoes and browse (and enjoy the quilts).

I work with guys who wear the same shoes to run in that they wear to mow the yard. I think it's a personal thing. Whatever makes you feel good. I only wear my running shoes to run in because they are ONLY comfortable running. I run differently then I walk so they aren't comfortable to go shopping in or to go to Quilt Expos in. ~~~smile~~~ You definitely want happy feet. Unhappy feet can lead to hip, knee, back and neck problems which can lead to massive headaches. Those are all bad things!!! I say it's a personal choice and if wearing your "feel good" shoes makes you and your feet happy then WEAR THEM!!!!
I agree with Tracie. Granted, I haven't been running for very long, but I know that my running shoes do make my feet happy...so if I'm running or walking any long distance I'm definitely going to wear them! I found this out the hard way when Bobby and I went to Disney in March. On the first day I walked all around the parks in my regular sneakers and my feet were killing me dead at the end of the day - I was having serious shooting pains in my arches and ankles. I then realized we'd been walking for great distances and changed into my running shoes...they forced me to stop limping and walk correctly and it really sped up the healing process...So, if you think your feet will be happier walking around the Expo all day, go for it! Have fun! :D
If you've found shoes that are good for running and make your feet happy I suggest buying another pair as backup. Whenever my running shoes need to be replaced I always try to find the same pair again, but of course they are never around. I hate trying a new shoe that I'm not confident will work well. That reminds me; now that I know I like the pair I recently bought I need to go buy a backup!
I tried a post comment on this before... Let'st try again...
Wear the shoes that you are comfortable with. They are for running and walking. Who is to say that you aren't walking a marathon this week at the Expo?
One thing though - I would give them a day to "rest" before you use them to run with. One reason to wear running shoes only when running is to give the cushioning time recover so they work well. Use them, but give them some time to recover.
My feet started to rebel against my old shoes when I got my nice new Brooks. I went out and bought a pair of running shoes (Reboks) for a third of the price. I wear the Reboks almost every day - but never to run in. I leave the running to the expensive shoes. My budget could handle that.
Second thing though - don't forget to clock the mileage in the shoes. If you are thinking of getting another pair at 200 miles, don't forget that you have added non-running miles. Miles is miles. (I typically walk ~2 miles a day at work according to the pedometer. On high walking days it gets almost to 3 miles. At the Expo, if you are walking a lot, maybe you will get to 5 miles?)
I agree with Tracie - you need to keep happy feet so you can avoid other problems.
I got my new Saucony Hurricane 9s yesterday. I wear them around the house, but not out in the snow/mud/slush because they are too beautiful.....such a snob I am. But atleast now I am ready to move to the New orleans area as the Mississippi rises.........I have hurricane shoes. ha ha ha
While I am a "wear your running shoes only for running" kind of girl, I also know that when I only had one pair of comfy shoes, that's what I wear. You should try to wear them *less*, but I figure, if you are doing something that will have you on your feet a lot, you will screw up your feet by being on them that long in bad shoes. So for now, browse to your heart's content in your running shoes. But in a month when you get a second pair, I better see them being used for running!
It's really because the shoes need time to breathe, so if you wear them every day, they wear out faster because the cushioning doesn't have time to bounce back. If you are alternating them some, then that's okay. Also, the milage is a factor, but if you have plans to get new ones soon, I'd make an effort to give the shoes you have now time to breathe when you can.
Also, don't stick them by the heater to dry. And stuff them with newspaper. That will help the cushioning stay newer longer.
Now go quilt shopping!
Oh, and I should have read the comments before I posted mine. Often you can find cheap shoes at marshalls or tj maxx. Next time you go visit D&C stop in to Marshalls and look for a cheap pair of sneakers... or tell me your size and I'll put Chino on the mission. He loves having an excuse to shop.
This second cheap pair could definitely be used as an alternate pair until you can afford to go get the fancy ones. They'll really help your fancy ones last longer.
I'd also say if you've been wearing these shoes for your ministy I'd say these probably are already getting up there in miles if they are the same ones you had at Disney.
Of course you know, you should post a picture when you do get the new ones in a month or so...
It is whatever keeps your feet happy. Surely you do not want to go to the expo and come home with sore feet and not be able to run for awhile. I am now in the Saucony Grid Stabil 6.
